Turn Waste to Value and Contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals

The world's plastic consumption is rising, cities are growing, and environmental challenges are increasing. RUNI screw compactors transform waste such as EPS, PET, and cans into recyclable resources, saving CO₂ and energy – all while contributing to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. This is waste management with impact, innovation, and value for both the environment and society.

UN Goals 7, 11, 12, 14

Our world faces great challenges:

By 2050, the global population will reach 9 billion people, with 70% living in large cities. This creates environmental and transport challenges. In Europe alone, around 500,000 people die annually due to air pollution. Managing air pollution and waste will be essential to ensure we can physically live in cities.

Despite its reputation, plastic is a very useful and versatile material. In 1962, 15 million tons of plastic were produced, while in 2014 that number had risen to 311 million tons, with 26 percent used for packaging. Today, the demand for plastic is growing faster than for steel or concrete. Once plastic enters circulation in our society, it is crucial that the plastic producers send it to market in a way that allows it to be recycled in a circular economy, and that it can be collected and managed in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.

It is estimated that 8 million tons of plastic waste are dumped in the world's oceans every year. This equates to one garbage truck unloading its cargo into the sea every minute. All this pollution is harmful, especially to wildlife. There is a need to increase the opportunities and incentives for recycling plastic. A decisive path forward is to make recycling more profitable.

"Turn waste to value" is more relevant than ever as we work towards achieving several of our global goals. Likewise, know-how, quality, and innovation. With all due modesty, these have been RUNI's DNA for the last 20 years.

Today, RUNI screw compactors help turn waste into resources, thereby increasing motivation and the possibility for recycling, circular economy, and energy optimization.

To put it into perspective:

RUNI compactors around the world have ensured that approximately 400,000 tons of EPS have been compressed – and thus recycled. This is equivalent to the weight of around 37 Eiffel Towers made of a product that is 98% air!

And for every kilo of EPS recycled globally, 3 liters of crude oil are saved in consumption and CO2 emissions. The current 380,000 tons of recycled EPS corresponds to over 545,000 trips worldwide by car.

And these are just the achievements from our machines for compacting EPS.

RUNI works based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, through the company's power consumption with climate-friendly energy production.

Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, through compression of EPS and dewatering of rejects and containers, helping with waste sorting and recycling of various waste fractions, as well as protecting the atmosphere in cities by ensuring full truckloads and avoiding unnecessary transports.

Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, through compressed EPS, PET bottles, and cans used as raw materials in production instead of virgin materials.

Goal 14, Life Below Water, through compression solutions for fishing boxes: recycling EPS from fish boxes, which extends the shelf life of fish during storage and transport. Additionally, making the recycling and handling of EPS and other plastic fractions both easier and more profitable to avoid their release into the environment.
